ROOM ACOUSTICS PROJECTS

YFU, prepares room acoustic projects on subjects like acoustical comfort, acoustical quality, intelligibility of speech etc. For the preparation of such projects, YFU uses self-developed or highly customized computer programs, and makes related calculations, most of which are trial-and-error methods, correct and fast. The subjects acoustical comfort, acoustical quality and intelligibility of speech are briefly explained in following lines.

Acoustical Comfort

To obtain auditory comfort for an individual by avoiding annoyances and defects like

  • To be unable to understand from where the sound comes, i.e., to be unable to determine the position of the sound source in the room (absence of presence criteria).
  • Disorders in the sound growth and sound decay in a closed room.
  • Unequal contribution of the interior to the sound level (valleys and peaks in the frequency response of the room).

Acoustical Quality

To increase the acoustical quality (mainly for music) taking precautions like

  • Achieving a balance between different frequencies
  • To determine to optimum reverberation time for the kind of music and the volume of the hall and then bring the reverberation time in the tolerance limits in each of the standard frequency bands (125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz).

Intelligibility of Speech

Achieving a good intelligibility of speech by avoiding defects like

  • To be unable to perceive consonants.
  • Masking of the syllables of each other, i.e., hearing of a syllable is prevented by the preceding one.
  • Unsuitable sound level and background noise level for the intelligibility of speech.
